Lesvos Island is best birdwatching destination in South-Eastern Europe
Spring on the island is an incredible experience as thousands of migrant birds pour into and over the island as they return from their sub-Saharan wintering grounds in Africa, stopping to breed in Lesvos.
One of Europe's most popular birdwatching destinations, Lesvos is also one of Europe's best birdwatching locations, especially in spring. It has 56 natural wetlands and 7 man-made wetlands. There are two characteristics that make Lesvos unique for birds compared to other islands of the Aegean Sea: the great variety of habitats and its position in the eastern Mediterranean. About 1500 plant species and 325 bird species from Europe, Asia and Africa have been recorded on the island. In Spring and Autumn, when the birds start to migrate, the view is very impressive. The birds we come across are flamingos, striking with their pink feathers, black storks, pied avocets, black-winged stilt, ruddy shelduck, white stork, European shag and many more.
